Arie writes about suicides resulting from the crisis and budget cuts in Italy. To date, no study has investigated the impact of austerity on suicides in Italy. To answer this question, I retrieved annual data on suicides and unemployment rates (for people over 15 years) for all Italian regions from the National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) from 2000 to 2010. Then, I obtained data on per capita expenditure on social services and benefits delivered by single and associated municipalities in 2008 from the SocialCohesion.Stat database.
