Resumen

Patients should receive the same quality of treatment whether administered by a specialist or general practitioner. The patient's welfare is the primary concern in determining when consultation with a specialist is indicated. A slow economy alone should not be a reason to exclude consultation with a specialist when indicated. However, when the economy begins to stagnate, repercussions occur in all businesses, and dentistry is no exception. Dentists in your referring base no doubt find that both they and their patients are struggling with this issue. For a variety of reasons, each with ethical implications, some general dentists are treating patients whom, under normal economic circumstances, they would have referred to you. For example, during a slow economy, many patients may feel pressed to make choices regarding their dental care simply to reduce their out-of-pocket expenses. A patient requiring certain procedures who typically would be referred to a specialist may request that his or her general dentist complete the care because the fees of nonspecialists commonly are lower than those of specialists.
